The large-format work "Segni Orizzontali" is a particularly typical work of Arte Povera in its deliberate reduction of means. In the late 1960s, Giorgio Griffa made a name for himself as a radical explorer of the basic elements of painting in Gian Enzo Sperone's Turin gallery. The present work illustrates this impressively: it is an example of an unusual working process in which unprimed linen is laid on the floor so that it slowly absorbs the applied strips of paint. As soon as the paint has dried, the works are folded like fabric and nailed directly to the wall for presentation without framing. The traces of the folding become a fundamental design element.
Throughout his life, Giorgio Griffa pursued a path that expanded his painterly practice, following the fundamental ideas of Analytical Painting and Arte Povera. In his works, he evokes the simplicity of materials and reduction of means, allowing the quality of the painting application and the picture support to have an effect. For Griffa, painting is an act, a means of expression to capture all artistic aspects of life.

With a certificate of authenticity from the Archivio Giorgio Griffa, Turin, dated 6.2.2019. The work is registered in the archive under the number AGG1973-042.
