Rare Articulated Mannequin
Description
One of the few surviving academy figures made in Paris in the mid-19th century. The anatomically precise construction of a light, portable papier-mâché body combined with movable leather ball joints allowed the artist to recreate almost any conceivable human pose. Fixed on a tripod, such an articulated mannequin served as an aid in the studio. It not only replaced the costly human model, which quickly became tired during long sessions, but was also used for drapery studies.
