Articulated Mannequin Horse and Rider
Description
This skilfully crafted artist's maquette is a rare testimony to Parisian studio practice around 1870. It is a fully articulated articulated horse whose neck, constructed from filigree leather segments, allows a lifelike bend. The body of the horse also carries a movable, attachable rider. Mounted on a height-adjustable base, the model served painters as an indispensable aid for the study of dynamic equestrian poses, as demanded by battle painting. Thanks to the adjustable mechanism, horse and rider merge into a sculpture that can be restaged again and again.
