Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
Zwei Akte im Innenraum
Description
The present drawing exemplifies the high point of the Dresden phase of the artists' group "Die Brücke". During this period, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and his companions sought spontaneous and direct expression, often inspired by African and Oceanic art, which they studied at the Dresden Ethnological Museum.
The exploration of the human figure in the interior, often in the studio, was a central theme. They often worked in group sessions, the so-called "quarter-hour nudes", in which the models were captured in short, changing poses. This encouraged a spontaneous, impulsive approach that emphasised the energy and immediacy of the moment.
Kirchner captures the moment of two naked female nudes facing each other with powerful, searching lines and a reduction to the essentials. The depiction of the body is simplified and outlined in order to achieve a greater expressive effect.
This work is documented in the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Archive, Wichtrach/Bern.
