Max Liebermann
In the Beer Garden
Description
For Max Liebermann, the beer garden is far more than just a place to drink and linger – for him, it is a stage for modern social life and an ideal subject for his light-filled, impressionistic style of painting. Particularly well-known is his painting ‘Münchner Biergarten’ (1884), which forms part of the collection of the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
The drawings on this theme – such as this one – look like modern snapshots. Liebermann uses details such as the groups of people and couples chatting, or the children playing under the trees in the foreground, to emphasise the dynamism of the spontaneous moment.
