Mathilde Karoline of Bavaria (1813–1862), daughter of Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese Charlotte Luise of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Married Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine. The view from the Grand Ducal couple’s country house on the Mathildenhöhe towards the city centre; the silhouette of the town church and the town palace can be seen in the background. The country house was built in 1833 by the city of Darmstadt as a wedding gift for Hereditary Grand Duke Ludwig (III) and his wife Mathilde. Grand Duchess Mathilde is the namesake of the park on the hill on the eastern edge of the city.
