Eugen Spiro
Still life with candle
Description
After his marriage to the actress Tilla Durieux was short-lived, Eugen Spiro moved from Berlin to Paris in 1906. Although Spiro did not give up his studio and his participation in exhibitions in Berlin and accepted many portrait commissions, he made contact with the Café du Dôme circle of painters in France following his lively exchange with the Berlin Secession and French Impressionism. He later remained friends with Hans Purrmann in particular. The present still life with candle was created during this time, although its realistic execution is still associated with the representatives of the Berlin Secession such as Franz Skarbina, Max Slevogt and Lovis Corinth.
The painting is registered in the archive for the completion of the catalogue raisonné of the Galerie von Abercron, Munich.
Exhibition: Still Life from an Eventful Century, Galerie Maulberger, Munich 1999, cat. no. 3, with colour illus.
