Description
In this bronze Mother and Child from 1975, Sorel Etrog develops one of his central visual ideas: the connection between two figures – mother and child – in an almost merging, organically mechanical form. The slender, vertically oriented bronze with black patina reduces the motif to a compressed, movement-oriented volume. The horizontal distance between the figures seems to be suspended; instead, they appear as a single, unfolding form whose contours are anchored in the material.
The mother-child motif is one of the constant themes in Etrog's work: it not only reflects personal experiences, but also symbolises transition, completion and the continuation of life.

Etrog, born in Romania in 1933 and later active in Israel and Canada, is one of the most important sculptors of the second half of the 20th century. His bronze sculptures are characterised by a formal mixture of organic and mechanical elements – such as screws, joints or hinges – through which physicality and technology are negotiated, as it were.
Etrog's work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale (1966), the World's Fair in Montreal (1967) and the Olympic Games in Seoul (1988). Today, the artist's works can be found in renowned museums such as MoMA in New York, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and the Tate in London.
