Description
With the present bronze sculpture Bull Unicorn I from 1969, Sorel Etrog created an archetypal form that combines both symbolism and abstraction. The work is part of the "Bulls" series, which Etrog developed at the end of his formative "Links" period (1963-71).
Central to these years is Etrog's development of the "link" motif – a joint or connecting piece that is formally reminiscent of chain links and metaphorically stands for the connection and separation of human existence. He was inspired by Etruscan art, which Etrog came into contact with during a trip to Italy in 1963. The sculptures in the "Bulls" series create bodies that appear both organic and constructed: the stylised horn section, the spiral-like volutes and the symmetrical tension of the forms combine to create a very unique visual language.
In this series, Etrog not only alludes to the iconography of the bull in Western art history, but also refers to Pablo Picasso and Francisco de Goya, whose works he studies intensively. In addition to several sculptural works in various sizes, Etrog also created drawings, studies and sketches in which he treated the motif of the bull in a variety of ways – as a symbol of strength, suffering, protection and inner conflict.
