Description
From 1923, an intensive artistic friendship developed between Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and the younger Swiss painter Albert Müller (1897-1926). In 1924 and 1925, the two worked together in Davos-Frauenkirch, where Kirchner had his studio and home. The summer of 1925 is regarded as the high point of their artistic exchange. Albert Müller, his wife Anni and their twins Judith and Kaspar (born in 1923) spent the summer with Kirchner. In the present sheet, Kirchner captures mother and children undressed with a quick brushstroke. A very intimate scene that shows the intimacy with the family.
In the course of their collaboration, the artists painted portraits of each other. In a woodcut from 1925, Albert Müller executes a portrait of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Conversely, Kirchner depicts both Albert Müller and the sculptor Hermann Scherer in the oil painting "The Friends" (1924/25).
Albert Müller died of typhoid fever in December 1926, putting an early end to his promising artistic career.

This work is documented in the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Archive, Wichtrach/Bern.
