Pencil and coloured pastels on brownish drawing paper. (c. 1880). 56.5 x 45 cm. On the reverse, a handwritten certificate of authenticity by the widow Charlotte ‘Lolo’ von Lenbach, Munich, dated 15 January 1935, and numbered ‘72b’ on an adhesive label.

Provenienza

Daniel Brücher, grandson of Gabriele Neven DuMont (1899–1978), daughter of the artist; given as a gift to the consignor’s father in 2000; in the family’s possession ever since, Netherlands.

The subject is presumably Ilka von Fabrice (1846–1907), a pupil of Franz von Lenbach and co-founder of the Munich Women Artists’ Association (1882). In the late 1890s, Lenbach painted a portrait of her mother and minister’s wife, Helene Freifrau von Fabrice (Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich, Inv. No. L232). – Generally darkened and with foxing. The edges are slightly bumped in places. In a condition appropriate to its age.
