Gerolamo Cairati studied in Milan and has been working in Munich since 1894. He exhibited at the then-leading Heinemann Gallery in Munich as well as at the International Art Exhibition in the Glaspalast. In "Spes Nostra", the artist paid particular attention to the various brocade fabrics, which lend the painting its ornamental character. The work is characterised by a strict verticality and exudes a solemn tranquillity and mystical atmosphere.
