The figure depicted is likely Johann Karl Ludwig, Count Palatine of Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld zu Gelnhausen (1745–1789), Imperial Major General; son of Johann von Pfalz-Gelnhausen (1698–1780) and Sophie Charlotte von Salm-Dhaun (1719–1770), elder brother of Count Palatine Wilhelm von Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld zu Gelnhausen (1752–1837), Duke of Bavaria from 1799. He was awarded the Electoral Palatinate Order of St Hubert, into which he was admitted in 1760.
