Descrizione
A very fine impression of the only state with burr on the woman's hairband and under her chin, ear and clasped hands. With the series of accidental marks appearing in the background above the wheel, which together form a rectangular shape. Half-length figure turned to the right, hands clasped in prayer, gaze directed forward. In this evocative work, Rembrandt portrays his wife Saskia in the guise of Saint Catherine. The delicate lines of the etching, enhanced by subtle applications of drypoint, lend the image an intimate sense of depth and expression. The quiet devotional pose merges religious iconography with personal closeness; a hallmark of Rembrandt’s portraiture during this period. With a narrow margin around the platemark. – Faint isolated foxing. Water stains in the left corner area. Verso a mounting strip along the top edge. Otherwise in good condition.
