Descrizione
A fine, dark lifetime impression of the first state, prior to the subtle reworking of many shadowy areas with a regular pattern of cross-hatching – particularly noticeable on the left cheek of the head lower centre. These etched sketch sheets, featuring isolated figures and heads, form a distinctive component of Rembrandt’s graphic oeuvre. They are rooted in the tradition of drawn sketch sheets, where the seemingly arbitrary juxtaposition of unrelated motifs and figures was a deliberate artistic choice. In the 17th century, such sheets were especially prized by collectors for their spontaneity and inventive character. Trimmed to or just within the platemark. – The paper is slightly thinned in places, the sheet has been laid down. Otherwise in good condition.
