As the daughter of an Austrian first lieutenant, Luise Ehrler von Erlenburg spent her childhood in Italian garrison towns. She began her training in painting with Emil Lauffers in Prague and Joseph Flüggen in Munich. In 1877, Luise married the painter Heinrich Max. In 1878, she made her debut at the Vienna Künstlerhaus and succeeded in winning Emperor Franz Joseph and the Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold as buyers of her works. In 1884, she moved with her husband to Munich, where she continued her studies under her brother-in-law Gabriel von Max.
