Description
Mrs Annie Wolff-Knize (1905-1979) is captured here frontally by Kokoschka. Sitting casually, she has rested her right arm on an armchair and is looking directly at the person in front of her. Her husband Fritz, owner of the menswear shop "Knize & Comp." in Vienna, was known for his elegant menswear and perfumes. Kokoschka and the Knize couple had a personal relationship, which is how the portrait commission came about. The portrait in oil was painted between 1931-35 when Kokoschka was in Prague after fleeing from Germany.

The painting accompanying the present drawing is now part of the Kai Feng Foundation in China (WVZ 1934/7) and shows Mrs Knize in a three-quarter view, seated slightly to one side with her arm raised.
