Description
In 1882, Sperl and his painter friend Wilhelm Leibl moved into quarters in Bad Aibling. It was a transitional period for Sperl, during which he moved further and further away from the figurative peasant genre in order to engage more intensively with the landscape. Here he shows a fenced-in garden, closed off at the back by a row of trees. On the right is a trellis with hedge roses and tall sunflowers. At this time, Sperl had joined the tendencies of open-air painting at the time, which can be seen in his impressionistic treatment of light.
