Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn
Girl with a Basket
Description
A very fine, fresh impression of the third state, with slight burr under the cap and with the fine horizontal wiping scratches and tone. With the shading lines added to the girl's forehead and nose. This young woman carrying a reed basket gives the impression that Rembrandt might have encountered her at the market. Yet, such a meeting is virtually impossible. Her 16th-century German attire appears decidedly outdated, and the chin strap around her jaw had not been worn in the Netherlands for centuries. For this portrayal, Rembrandt likely drew inspiration from 16th-century costume print series. With narrow margins around the inky platemark. – Verso with slight foxing and one very faint water stain. Verso remnants of former mounting along the right margin. Otherwise in very good condition. Very rare!
