Description
Very good, strong impressions of the plate cut in several pieces; edited by Captain Baillie, each with wide margins around the plate mark. The centrepiece with Christ preaching in the square plate. Around 1775, Captain William Baillie printed a run of one hundred copies of Rembrandt's original printing plates, which he had painstakingly reworked himself; he had acquired the plate, which had already been worn down by repeated printing, from the painter and engraver John Greenwood. Baillie, himself an engraver, attempted to restore the work, cutting the plate into four parts, reworking it further and having it printed as separate sheets. No other sheet by Rembrandt enjoys such a high degree of fame as ‘The Hundred Guilder Print’. Paper slightly time-stained and with a few spots. Slight handling marks. In the margin with pencil lines. Otherwise in good condition. Very rare!
