Christian Friedrich Gille
Wide Saxon Landscape
Description
This oil study can be attributed to the artist's early Dresden period. Gille undoubtedly studied the motif in the neighbourhood of Dresden. It is most likely a distant view of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains from a vantage point to the south or of the Borsberg hills near Pillnitz. We would like to thank Dr Anne Spitzer and Dr Gerd Spitzer, Bad Harzburg, for kind information. The work will be included in the Catalogue Raisonné currently in preparation.
