Nicolas Guibal
Portrait of Duke Carl Eugen von Württemberg (1728-1793)
Description
The approximately fifty-year-old Carl Eugen von Württemberg is depicted here in half-length in armour, ermine cloak and with the red ribbon of the Order of the Württemberg Crown, founded in 1702. His right hand clasps a strikingly short baton. The portrait head appears almost identically as a drawing in a painting dated 1775 by the workshop of the court painter Nicolaus Guibal in the Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart, which shows three students of the Carlsschule founded by Carl Eugen, one of whom is copying the portrait of the duke, executed by their teacher Guibal. With an undated expert opinion by Prof. Dr Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin (copy).
