According to the label on the reverse, Prof. Dr Hermann Voss gave the oral information that the present painting was a study for the altarpiece on the right of the choir steps in the collegiate church of St Leodegar in Schönenwerd in the canton of Solothurn. This, surrounded by a richly decorated rococo frame, also depicts the Nativity and was painted by Domenico Corvi after a design by Joseph Esperlin.
