Carl Spitzweg
Italian landscape with balustrade and staffage figures
Description
Shortly after Carl Spitzweg passed his examination as a practical pharmacist on 4 April 1832, he set off on an extensive journey through Italy. In retrospect, this trip was groundbreaking, as it encouraged the young man to devote himself to painting and drawing. In his later work, he recalled this formative journey, which had already been almost four decades in the past, in several paintings - including this small landscape with figures in typical local costume. - Slight adhesive creases due to mounting. A barely noticeable vertical fold mark. The corners partially torn; these areas on the backing card repaired with brownish colour. In good condition for its age.
