Joseph Stella
City Smoke
Description
Joseph Stella is considered America's first Futurist painter and incorporates various European avant-garde styles into his oeuvre. After a trip to Europe between 1909 and 1912, during which he met the Italian Futurists, he was fascinated by the speed, energy and dynamism of the modern world. He transferred Futurist techniques such as the depiction of movement and fragmentation to New York motifs such as the Coney Island amusement park and the Brooklyn Bridge.
