Albrecht Dürer
Hieronymus im Gehäus
Beschreibung
A warm Meder c impression, printing with good contrasts and depth. Trimmed to the borderlines, trimmed within approx. 1.7 cm at the bottom edge.
Between 1513 and 1514, Dürer created his three 'Meisterstiche' in almost the same size, which have long been considered a conceptual unit. In a room designed according to the rules of central perspective, one sees the favourite saint of humanistically educated society translating the Bible from the original Greek text into the Latin Vulgate. The effect of the drawing is due in no small part to the great virtuosity with which the materiality of the various objects is depicted, for example the soft fur of the lion, the crumbling edges of the hard masonry, and the vivid grain of the wooden beam ceiling. The composition is thus imbued with a variety of warm tones and luminous contrasts, effects that defy the inherent linearity Dürer’s medium. – Laid down on paper due to minor paper defects on the edges. Isolated brown spots. There is a missing section on the lower right edge; a small surface abrasion to the left of the bottle gourd hanging from the ceiling, otherwise in good condition.
