Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn

A very fine, early lifetime impression of the second state, with strong burr visible in the hat on the back of the man on the far right as well as on the curtains, and with subtle plate tone throughout. The outline of the hat now completed and more rays encircling Christ's head drawn in. In the same year Rembrandt created his small etchings on the childhood of Christ, he also produced four larger prints depicting key moments from Christ’s life. Among them is the Supper at Emmaus, which captures the moment two disciples recognise the resurrected Christ as he breaks bread with them. Their emotional response is clear—one raises his arms in shock, the other folds his hands in prayer. Christ, seated at the centre, radiates light, symbolising spiritual revelation. In contrast, the innkeeper in the foreground remains unaware of the miracle, still in darkness. Trimmed to the platemark. – Paper lightly time-stained and with foxing on the verso.
