Beschreibung
A very fine, rich lifetime impression of the first state, displaying the vertical wiping scratches and 'dirty' background in the blank area characteristic of the earliest impressions. No wear in the deeply shadowed areas under the brim of Rembrandt's hat. The curved slipped stroke above Saskia's right eyebrow, which is later removed, is clearly visible. This rare double portrait shows Rembrandt—who only occasionally depicted himself at work—seated at a table in everyday attire. It is the only known etching of the artist with his wife Saskia, created two years after their marriage. Likely drawn before a mirror, Rembrandt appears as a left-handed draftsman. The composition subtly reflects the theme 'Love gives birth to art' ('Liefde paart kunst'), highlighting Saskia’s role as a source of inspiration in his life and work. Trimmed to the vertical lines at the left and right. – Minor, barely noticeable foxing. Otherwise in very good condition.
