Beschreibung
A very good, strong impression of the rare first state, with uneven plate edges clearly visible on the right and left edge. Featuring the delicate horizontal scratches above the right foot, which can be found in later impressions of the first state. One of the most captivating sheets by the artist from the Leiden period around 1630. Prints from this plate are extremely rare, as the plate was lost early on. In Nowell-Usticke, it is marked with 'R–' for 'rare'. More recent Rembrandt scholarship suggests the possibility of it being a self-portrait of the artist. With a very fine margin around the plate edge, nearly cut to it at the top. – The paper slightly time-stained. Verso with remnants and traces of former mounting, otherwise in good condition.
